What Determines Protection Class?

You may have noticed 2 or 3 protection classes per town. Usually, if a home is less than 5 road miles to a fire department, they receive the lower (better) protection class. If a home is over 5 road miles to a fire department, they receive the higher protection class.

Road miles are measured by route. A fire station may be ½ a mile away if a person could drive through a forest or over a mountain. But on the road, it may take over 5 miles to drive to the destination. Therefore, miles to a fire station are measured by road miles.

fire tanker truck

Distance to the nearest fire hydrant also determines protection class. Typically, the rule is that a home must be within 1,000 feet of a hydrant for the lower protection class to apply. See fire departments like Alabama Port and Creola. Single outlet hydrants may not be recognized. Double outlet hydrants with 1 ½ inch connections also may not be recognized. Citronelle and Grand Bay have approved dry hydrants. There are also alternative water sources.

Tanner Williams Fire Department recognizes alternate credible water supply! Therefore hydrant distance does not apply. Fire tanker trucks store water for extinguishing fires.

Protection class affects the cost of house insurance.  Typically in homeowners insurance, protection class 1, 2 and 3 will receive the cheapest premium.  Protection class 4, 5, and 6 are the most common classes.  Protection 7, 8, & 9 receive the highest premiums.  Protection class 10 applies when there is no fire department.  It also applies in towns such as Calcedeaver where the fire department offers a protection class 9 rating, but it becomes PC 10 if the house is over 5 road miles from the fire department.
